What Photoshop is for, what the module covers, and how it differs from Illustrator and Lightroom.
The short answer. Photoshop edits pixels — retouching, masking, compositing, anything at a fixed size on screen. It is the tool most beginners should learn first, because results are immediate. At Future Vision it is module 05 inside our graphic design courses, taught next to Illustrator and design principles rather than as a standalone software class. The Basic course runs four months; the Advanced course runs nine.
What Photoshop is actually for
Photoshop works on pixels — a fixed grid of coloured dots. That makes it exceptional at anything involving a photograph, and the wrong tool for anything that must scale.

What the Photoshop module covers
This is module 05 of our graphic design syllabus, taught in the same sequence in both courses:
- Image editing — crop, exposure, colour correction, resolution and resizing
- Selection and masking — isolating part of an image cleanly, including hair and soft edges, which is where most beginners give themselves away
- Layers and compositing — building an image from parts so that every part stays editable
- Retouching — skin, product surfaces, removing distractions, healing and cloning
- Filters and effects — and restraint about using them
- Text — type inside an image, and why type set in Photoshop has limits
- Advanced compositing — matching light, colour and perspective so a composite does not look assembled
The thing that separates amateurs from professionals
It is not any particular tool. It is non-destructive working.
A beginner edits the photograph directly: erases the background, paints over the blemish, flattens the file. It looks fine. Then the client asks for the background back, and it is gone.
A professional uses layers, masks and adjustment layers, so nothing is ever actually destroyed and every decision can be revised a week later. It is the same finished image and a completely different file. Learning to work that way from the start is most of what a taught Photoshop course is worth.
Photoshop or Illustrator first?
Photoshop. Results are immediate and visible, which keeps you going in the first weeks. Illustrator's pen tool is a genuine hurdle and it is easier to face once you already feel competent in one Adobe tool.
You need both. Most real design jobs use them together — a poster with a retouched photograph and a vector logo needs each doing what it is good at. They are taught in that order in both our courses.
Can AI replace Photoshop skills?
Not yet, and not the way people expect.
Generative Fill and similar tools genuinely remove hours of tedious work — extending a background, removing an object, generating a plausible sky. They are good, and getting better.
What they cannot do is decide what the image should look like, or notice that the result is subtly wrong — the light coming from two directions, the reflection that does not match. We teach Adobe Firefly and Generative Fill in the course precisely because they are useful, and we teach the manual skills alongside them, because someone who only knows the AI tools cannot fix them when they fail. And they do fail.

What is Adobe Photoshop used for?
Photoshop edits pixels. It is the standard tool for retouching photographs, removing and replacing parts of an image, combining several images into one convincing picture, preparing product photos, and making anything that lives at a fixed size on screen. It is not the tool for logos or artwork that has to scale, which is what Illustrator is for.
What is the difference between Photoshop, Illustrator and Lightroom?
Photoshop edits pixels, Illustrator draws vectors, and Lightroom processes photographs in bulk. Use Photoshop to retouch one image thoroughly or composite several together. Use Illustrator for logos, icons and anything that must scale without going blurry. Use Lightroom to correct exposure and colour across two hundred wedding photographs at once. Photoshop and Lightroom overlap for photographers; Photoshop and Illustrator rarely overlap at all.
How long does it take to learn Photoshop?
Basic editing comes within two or three weeks. The concept that takes longer is non-destructive working — layers, masks and adjustment layers rather than painting directly onto the image — and that is the difference between someone who can use Photoshop and someone who can be trusted with a client's file. Reaching a professional standard takes a few months of regular practice on real work.
Is Photoshop hard to learn?
Photoshop is easier to start with than Illustrator because the results are immediate and visible. The difficulty is not any single tool but the number of them: there are usually five ways to do the same job and only one is right for the situation. Learning which to reach for is what a taught course gives you that video tutorials generally do not.
Is there a separate Photoshop-only course in Surat at Future Vision?
No. Photoshop is module 05 inside our graphic design courses, taught next to Illustrator and design principles. Photoshop on its own produces someone who can retouch an image but cannot compose a layout or set type, and that gap is visible in the first two pieces of a portfolio. The Basic Graphic Design course runs four months and the Advanced course runs nine.
Can AI tools replace Photoshop skills?

Do I need to buy Photoshop to attend the course?
No. You work on Photoshop on the machines at our Surat centres during class. Adobe sells a Photography plan that includes Photoshop and Lightroom for home practice, and there is a free seven-day trial, but neither is required to take the course.
