CorelDRAW vs Illustrator

Two programs that do the same job. What actually separates them, and which one to learn if you have to pick.

Future Vision Computer Institute, Surat · Updated 31 August 2026

The short answer. They are close substitutes and a competent designer makes the same logo in either. Illustrator has wider industry adoption, more job listings and sits inside the Adobe set studios already run. CorelDRAW is often quicker for single-operator print and signage work and is still common in Indian print shops. If you are choosing one now and want the most options afterwards, learn Illustrator. We teach Illustrator and no longer teach CorelDRAW.

What CorelDRAW genuinely does better

It would be dishonest to pretend Illustrator wins on everything, so here is where CorelDRAW is the better tool:

What Illustrator does better

The question underneath the question

Most people asking this are really asking which one gets me work. That depends on the work:

If you want to work inLearn
A design studio or advertising agencyIllustrator
Packaging or brand designIllustrator
Freelance logo and identity workIllustrator
A local print, flex or signage shopCorelDRAW — ask the shop first
Your own printing businessCorelDRAW is defensible
You genuinely do not know yetIllustrator — it keeps the most doors open

Switching later is easy

This is the part nobody tells beginners, and it takes the pressure out of the decision.

The concepts are identical in both programs: anchor points, paths, fills and strokes, layers, CMYK and RGB, converting type to outlines, preparing artwork for a printer. Learn those properly in one program and the other takes a few days to find your way around.

So the real risk is not choosing the wrong program. It is learning a program without learning design — ending up able to operate software but unable to judge a layout, set type or build a logo that works at every size.

Do we teach CorelDRAW?

No. We used to, and we stopped.

We teach Adobe Illustrator because it is what design employers ask for and because it sits inside the Adobe set our courses already cover — Photoshop, Premiere Pro, After Effects, Lightroom, Dimension.

If you specifically need CorelDRAW for a print or signage job you already have, we would rather say so plainly than sell you a course that does not match what you came for. And if you learn Illustrator with us, picking up CorelDRAW afterwards will take you a few days.

Common questions

Is CorelDRAW or Illustrator better?

Neither is better in general. They are close substitutes that both draw vector artwork, and a competent designer produces the same logo in either. Illustrator has wider industry adoption, appears in more job listings and works alongside Photoshop and the rest of the Adobe tools that studios already run. CorelDRAW is often faster for single-operator print and signage work and is still common in Indian print shops. If you are choosing one to learn now and want the widest set of options afterwards, learn Illustrator.

Which is easier to learn, CorelDRAW or Illustrator?

CorelDRAW is generally easier at the start. Its interface is more direct, the page setup model suits print work naturally, and beginners tend to produce a usable file sooner. Illustrator asks more of you early on, mainly because of the pen tool, which takes two or three weeks of practice before it stops feeling awkward. That early difficulty is not a reason to avoid Illustrator, because the skills it builds transfer everywhere.

Which one do print shops in India use?

Many Indian print, signage, flex and offset businesses run CorelDRAW, often on older versions, because it was established in that trade long before Illustrator became affordable and because CDR files circulate freely between shops. Design studios, agencies, advertising firms and packaging companies use Illustrator. So the honest answer depends on which of those you intend to work in, and a designer who understands vector work can move between them.

Can CorelDRAW open Illustrator files and the other way round?

Partly, and not reliably enough to depend on. CorelDRAW can import AI and EPS files and Illustrator can open some CDR files, but complex artwork frequently loses effects, transparency or type formatting in the exchange. The practical workaround the trade uses is PDF or EPS as a neutral format, and converting type to outlines before sending anything to a printer, whichever program made it.

How much do CorelDRAW and Illustrator cost?

CorelDRAW is sold both as a one-time perpetual licence and as a subscription, and the perpetual option is why many small print businesses chose it. Illustrator is subscription only, either on its own or in the Creative Cloud bundle. Over a few years the perpetual licence usually works out cheaper if you never upgrade. Neither cost applies while you are studying with us, because you work on the machines at our centres.

Does Future Vision teach CorelDRAW?

No. We used to and we stopped. We teach Adobe Illustrator instead, because it is what design employers ask for and it sits inside the Adobe set that our courses already cover. If you specifically need CorelDRAW for a print or signage job you already have, we would rather tell you that plainly than sell you a course that does not match what you came for.

If I learn Illustrator, how hard is it to switch to CorelDRAW later?

A few days. The concepts are the same in both: anchor points, paths, fills and strokes, layers, colour modes, converting type to outlines, preparing artwork for print. Once those are genuinely understood, the second program is a matter of finding where the same commands live. That is why learning either well is more valuable than picking the right one.
